Renewable energy investing – investing in the future

If you’re interested in doing your bit to forward the cause of climate change, but are not ready yet to install solar panels or a solar water heater, then renewable energy investing may be for you. If you already have a portfolio of stocks which are not doing so well at the moment, it is worth checking out various alternative energy stocks as most of these are in growing companies given the price rises in oil and other fossil fuels.renewable energy investing

The alternative energy sector is a rapid growth industry due to pressure from Governments to meet their emissions targets by one means or another. Nearly everyone now accepts that the fuels we have been depending on for so long are becoming harder to obtain and are thus selling at prices that the general public can barely afford. All this is creating opportunities for the savvy investor, keen to diversify his portfolio or the ethical investor who will only invest in companies he can feel good about.

Renewable energy investing requires some research

It’s vital though, to do some research into renewable energy investing before committing you money into any alternative energy stocks. If you have not previously invested in the market, it’s vital to enlist the help of a financial planner, at least in the beginning. This will insulate you from the more speculative energy stocks as many of these companies are quite young and will take some time before moving into a profitable situation. Hence it may be quite a while before you see a return on your investments. It is also difficult to obtain financial data from these newer companies for comparison. Make sure you choose companies with a viable cash generation plan for the future.

How to go about renewable energy investing

However that doesn’t mean you can’t speculate with a small portion of you money, as a lot of these start-up energy stocks are cheap and have the potential to rise sharply at some point in time. The question is, which one’s? That’s something that no-one can answer of course.

Another option for those with limited funds to invest is to look at one of the alternative energy mutual funds which pool together investor/s money to invest in a basket of energy stocks from socially responsible companies.

All in all, renewable energy investing has a bright future and an increasing amount of investor’s funds are flowing into this sector and there is a real upward potential. If you are careful with picking the right energy companies, there is potential to make quite a bit of money from alternative energy, while at the same time doing your bit for the environment. Please do not take this as financial advice. Always consult with a reputable licensed financial advisor before going ahead with any renewable energy investing.
