  • Sharebar

If you think you know how to save on electricity – read on!

Saving the environment and global warming are not subjects that interest everyone, however important we may think they are. However when turned into a subject like how to save on electricity the majority of people sit up and take notice. We’re all familiar by now with the standard save electricity in the home tips, so here are some that you may not have heard yet. Let’s dig deeper and explore some energy saving tips for our main electrical appliances.

A large appliance such as a refrigerator is a major investment. If you have an old refrigerator that stops working, your first inclination may be to have it repaired. Maybe it needs a new thermostat, or the seal needs replacing? However, this may not be the most cost effective answer. Buying a new refrigerator, while costing more upfront, will save you a lot in your energy bills as time goes on.

This applies to just about all appliances sold nowadays. Manufacturers have had to come to the party and make their appliances more energy friendly. They do this because more and more consumers are demanding products that will work efficiently and save them money. This applies to televisions, computers, air conditioners and especially water heaters. So if possible, don’t repair, replace.

So, given that we have energy efficient appliances, what else can we do?

Air conditioners are big energy guzzlers. How can we use them more efficiently? Turn them off and open the windows! Unless you live in an extreme climate, do you really need to be at a constant temperature at all hours of the day and night? Dress appropriately for the weather and enjoy the fresh air in your home. Always make sure your filters are clean when you do use your air conditioner and it will work more efficiently.

Learn how to save on electricity in the kitchen

Let’s move into the kitchen. Do you use your oven a lot? If so ask yourself if you can cook the same food in the microwave, on top of the stove or even enjoy a BBQ outside. If you do need to use your oven, you can cook your vegetables in there as well. Simply put them in a covered dish with a little water. A smaller toaster oven may also be a good investment for you.

Still in the kitchen, make sure the refrigerator motor is kept clean and free of dust. This will increase the efficiency and life of the motor. Keep your fridge as full as possible. If your fridge is half empty, it will be struggling to keep it’s cool! Consider putting bottles of water in there just to maintain the temperature.

Last but not least, a tip when ironing. Although small, irons do use a lot of power. Sort your ironing into categories. Start on the light items first before turning your thermostat up for linens and cottons. You may be able to save time as well by questioning whether certain garments really need ironing at all. Sometimes hanging them in the closet while still damp will keep them wrinkle free.

I hope these few suggestions have given you some new ideas. Sometimes just thinking outside the box can show you lots of new hints on how to save on electricity which will save you a lot of money and time without dramatically affecting your lifestyle.
